A - Z of FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
APPROVED SCALES
Trade Approved (or Trade Stamped) and None Approved (or None Trade).
If your scale is used to determine the weight of goods and that weight forms the basis of an exchange of money (or moneysworth) this is classed as Trade use and it is a legal requirement to use a Trade Approved scale. (Since 2003 medical scales were brought under the same legal control and must be of an approved type).
Where scales are used to determine the weight of goods purely for your own use or in a production process for example, these are None Trade applications because money is not being exchanged and you can use a None Trade scale.
Trading Standards Officers have powers to inspect weighing equipment used in controlled applications and as the legal obligation is on the user of the scale, it is important that you are using the correct equipment. If you are unsure about the type of equipment to use we will be happy to advise. For more information you can also contact your local Trading Standards Department.
BATTERY CARE
Over time alkaline batteries are prone to leaking a caustic agent that can cause respiratory, eye and skin irritation. Once a leak has formed it can also lead to permanent damage of the device. Points to remember about battery care include:-
* Do not attempt to recharge alkaline batteries
* Do not mix battery types in the same device
* Replace all of the batteries at the same time
* Store batteries in a dry place
* Remove batteries for storage of devices.
CALIBRATION
Calibration is the procedure of testing a scale and recording the results of the test in a consistent and recognisable way.
At Proweight we calibrate scales in accordance with the UK Weighing Federation Code of Practice using weights traceable to national standards. We have in house facilities for design, build, repair and calibration and our weights (up to 10 tonne) are tested on a regular basis by the Local Authority.

These services have been introduced by Mastercard/Maestro and Visa in conjunction with the issuing banks.
If the card you are using is part of the scheme, when you have entered your card details on the payment page you may be taken to a page hosted by your card issuer and asked to participate in this additional security process.
